Of recent Uganda was invaded by a silent killer. This stranger is none but the so-called Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever. This is a very deadly illness which is far more dangerous than DANGER itself! Worse still, it’s incurable.
Uganda has so far seen 3 major outbreaks in the past 12 years. The deadliest was in the year 2000 when 425 people were infected; more than half of them died. This year, it was first reported in Kibaale district, about 200Km West of Kampala. There, it left 14 people dead, including one from Kampala.
‘’Laboratory investigations done at the Uganda Virus Research Institute have confirmed that the strange disease reported in Kibaale is indeed Ebola hemorrhagic fever.’’ The Uganda government and the World Health Organization said in a joint statement.
The origins of the disease are still a mystery, but researchers theorize that it might have come from an animal host. In addition, it is assumed that the virus must have crossed over to humans from an animal with which someone got in physical contact.
Ebola spreads at a terrific rate mostly through physical contact of uninfected people with an infected person or his body fluids; or when mourners get in physical contact with the body of a victim.
The period between the time of infection and the time when signs start showing is called the incubation period of a disease. The incubation period of Ebola can be as short as 2 days or as long as 21 days. Once a person is infected with the disease, the chances of death are as high as 90 per cent_ so the person can die in the second week after showing signs and symptoms(some of which may include: diarrhoea, strong headache, skin rush, external and internal bleeding) The President of Uganda, H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has called on people to avoid physical contact (especially the very common handshakes), after the deadly virus spread in the capital. He also said 7 doctors and 13 health workers at Mulago hospital, the main referral hospital in Kampala, are quarantine after ‘’at least one or two cases were taken there.
So, everybody out there, watchout on the people you shake hands with, it could be the SILENT KILLER!!!
