Colegiul National Bilingv "George Cosbuc"
“Coşbuc is not just a school, it’s a way of life” – that’s a good start for a description of our school, for it says it all.
Every one of us is different, and Coşbuc is where everyone can find their rightful place. Our college is in Bucharest, the Romanian capital. The city centre is not far away, and most students walk to school.
The building is not very large, so lessons must be conducted in two sessions. The early session is from 7.30 to 13.30 and the late session is from 13.30 to 18.30. Nonetheless, the school is well-organised and there are various classrooms and labs for IT, chemistry, physics and language. Almost all the teachers use new media in their lessons and they take part in various professional development programmes. There are 28 students per class on average, but German and French are taught in smaller groups.
Our school has an old and interesting history which tells us a great deal about its origins: between 1869 and 1949, our school was an all-girls’ institution called Choissy-Mangru. From the start, French and German were taught as core subjects in the school. Learning German or French was very much in vogue at the time.
In 1991, our school was renamed “Liceul Bilingv de Limba Engleza” (English Grammar School). Since then, our students have benefited from English lessons with specialist teachers from the United Kingdom, the US, Australia and Canada. This opportunity is available thanks to agreements with the organisations GAP, SOL, CETP and PEACE CORPS.
In 2005, the English Grammar School gained the name which it bears today: “Colegiul Național Bilingv George Coşbuc”. English is taught as a core subject at school, with German, French and Spanish as second foreign languages.
For some years, our school has been engaged in various projects which have resulted in school exchanges being set up. For example, an exchange has already taken place with an Italian school in Sicily. Most students play a very active role in voluntary programmes: for example, they visit children’s homes and teach the children English.
Everyone wants to be able to express their feelings, and our students want to speak openly and freely about their projects or problems. They can do so in the school council, which meets once a month.
